Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Coordinator, the Gulf of Mexico University Research Collaborative (GOMURC), a university-based oceanographic research consortium representing institutions across Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. The Gulf of Mexico University Research Collaborative (GOMURC) supports and facilitates the work of educators, scientists, and agencies responding to state, regional, national, and international concerns. This position is responsible for coordinating, supporting and promoting the mission and activities of the GOMURC.
Essential Duties: The Coordinator is responsible for working with members to develop and promote the overall mission and strategies of the GOMURC and to oversee day-to-day operations, including personnel and budget management. Working closely with the Chair of the GOMURC, the Coordinator will independently ensure that the goals and objectives of the GOMURC are accomplished through overseeing assigned duties and resources. In addition, the primary responsibilities of the Coordinator include, but are not limited to:
Planning: Draft and execute (upon approval) a strategic plan and bylaws for the GOMURC. Plan, schedule, coordinate, and execute conferences, workshops, and other special events on behalf of the GOMURC.
Advocacy: Seek and promote opportunities to develop and strengthen partnerships with local, state and federal organizations, including an emphasis on collaboration with the Gulf of Mexico Alliance and its affiliated organizations. Build partnerships with other institutions to support and facilitate programs that will enhance the quality and scope of cooperative educational and research programs across the region. The Coordinator will represent the five members of the GOMURC on a local, regional, and/or national level.
Coordination: Assist members in identifying opportunities and developing collaborative research proposals for external funding. Facilitate the publication of reports and research findings that will benefit the success of the GOMURC. Develop, maintain and organize contact databases of collaborators, and serve as liaison between institutions across the five member states.
Accountability: Support members in conducting assessments, evaluations and analyses on the progress of overall program effectiveness together with implementing appropriate procedures to ensure efficiency and accuracy to fulfill the GOMURC's mission. Prepare written reports and present recommendations for GOMURC members to review and approve on an annual basis.
Communication: Develop a comprehensive communication plan to promote and implement research initiatives established by GOMURC members. Support, lead, and participate in conferences to provide educational outreach to the educational and scientific communities as well as the general public. Support a marine science web forum for members to discuss selected topics.
Hosted, in the first instance, by the Florida Institute of Oceanography (located in St. Petersburg, Florida), this position will require travel across the five state region and nation, to conduct/organize/lead workshops and conferences on behalf of the GOMURC.
Minimum Requirements: A Master's degree in an appropriate field and five (5) years successful leadership experience of a statewide, regional or national educational and/or scientific organization with a focus on marine science and oceanography. Demonstrable success in building multi-constituent collaborations, including public and private sector agencies. Knowledge of State and Federal political processes. Highly effective written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of the Gulf of Mexico region and a thorough understanding of the scientific issues related to restoration of the marine and coastal habitat.
Preferred Requirements: PhD in Marine Science or ABD in related field.
